When I be came interested in...
When I be came interested in Christian Science, I was indulging in the use of tobacco to a great extent. As I continued to read and study our textbook, Science and Health by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, I soon discovered that the use of tobacco is not in accordance with the teat hings of this Science. After many arguments with myself, I determined to give up this habit. Mortal mind argued that it would be better to continue my reading of Christian Science and one day the tobacco habit would fall away. At the time I thought this sounded reasonable; so I continued to read and study, but the habit did not leave me.
One day when I was feeling very sorry for myself because I was not healed, the thought came to me rather forcibly, What is this thing you call will power? and I reasoned. Why, it is the exercise of the human will. Then I remembered these words from "the scientific statement of being" in Science and Health (p. 468): "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation for God is All-in-all." I saw clearly that since this statement is true, as an idea of Mind I could not possess a mind separate and apart from God. Mind possessed me, and since there is only one Mind, there is only one will; and that is God's will. Then I thought, What would God's will be? The answer was that it would, of course, be the will to do what was right. I then threw away the tobacco.
There were times when I had a desire to smoke, but I said, sometimes aloud. "No, it is God's will that I give up all unlike good, and I have the will to do right." Then all desire to use tobacco left me, and it has never returned. This healing occurred over twenty years ago. I am very grateful for this experience and for the many beautiful proofs of God's protecting care and loving guidance I have had. I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, and for class instruction.—Carl B. Ross, San Francisco, California.
