WHY IS DISEASE UNREAL?
Great spiritual facts hitherto unseen seem radical and revolutionary to established religious thinking, and the absolute declaration of Christian Science that Principle and its idea, man, are forever perfect naturally does not agree with the testimony of the physical senses. There is nothing conservative about the teaching of Christian Science. It cannot be accepted conservatively or with mental reservations.
Truth is an undivided garment. Reality is not expressed in partial or half truths. The Psalmist wrote (Ps. 117:2), "The truth of the Lord endureth for ever." So in Christian Science, if one wishes to demonstrate it he cannot accept some statements of truth and reject others on the ground that they are not practical or essential.
One of the most radical declarations of Christian Science, and the one perhaps most resisted by those who do not understand it, is its statement that disease is unreal. When we declare that disease has no basic reality, but exists only as a belief, a faulty mental picture, some people are inclined to be quite stirred and even resentful. And yet it might be asked of those individuals, "Do you want to be told that you have a real disease, that you are suffering and may shortly die?" Why does one go to a doctor? To get rid of disease, to have it made unreal and destroyed.
