A TRUE SENSE OF MOTHER
In her book "Miscellaneous Writings" (p.159) Mary Baker Eddy says: "O glorious Truth! O Mother Love! how has the sense of Thy children grown to behold Thee!" The mother qualities of God are unfolded throughout her writings, especially in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." God's motherhood means for us an ever-available, sustaining, comforting, healing presence. This was practically demonstrated by a businessman who during World War II sought the help of a Christian Science practitioner in connection with work that had been assigned to him by the government, work that involved a large amount of material and many people. Christian Science, the law of God, had already successfully operated in his affairs, but there were yet many important decisions to be made.
Just as the practitioner closed her eyes in silent prayer, the patient suddenly interrupted by saying, "And my thumb hurts," as he held up his hand for her to see. He had not mentioned any physical affliction before, and immediately the practitioner was reminded of a little boy turning to his mother for comfort and healing, all the while expecting and receiving her love and attention.
Spiritual sense told her that the patient was really turning to his divine Mother, Love, for help. She recognized with reverence the gentle presence of God's motherhood. She realized that this all-inclusive mother-love was holding him in the divine embrace, binding up his wounds and dispelling illusions. She knew, too, that as an idea of God he was free and unfettered and that the manifestation of this healing would be a proof to him of Love's care.
