GOOD THOUGHTS ARE SALUTARY

[Original article in German]

That there are two sides to everything, a good and a bad side, is a widespread notion. But if we consider life as the reflection of divine Life, God, which we learn in Christian Science is the only right, spiritual basis of thought, we shall find that there is in fact only the one side, the perfect, true, and good, for only that which is true, good, divine, is real.

Mortal consciousness is often so confused by the old erroneous point of view that God is both good and evil that mankind appears to suffer severely under this mistaken concept. But whoever studies the text book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and our Leader's other writings very soon realizes that God is the source of all that is true and good; that He neither knows nor does evil, because for Him that only exists which according to the first chapter of Genesis He created. He created man. His image, perfect; hence the real man, the man of God's creating, cannot suffer, be sick, or be inharmonious. The belief in the reality of discord and disease breaks the First Commandment (Ex. 20:3), "Thou shalt have no other gods before me," which means that we are not to fear a supposititious evil power, but are always to be conscious of the one God and of His omnipotence and ever-presence. On page 340 of Science and Health our beloved Leader says: "The First Commandment is my favorite text. It demonstrates Christian Science."

Frequently it is said, "I have prayed so often to God to make me well, but without success." However, since Christian Science teaches that the cause of disease is mental, it is more important to ask God for the wisdom to recognize our false beliefs and for the courage to renounce them. When we understand that God created man perfect and know that all that He created exists forever and never changes, we shall recognize as false the belief that man is ever less than perfectly harmonious.
