Through the study of the textbook...

Through the study of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I am better able to understand the Biblical statement of Paul, "We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord" (II Cor. 5:8).

Some years ago I suffered greatly from an attack of ivy poisoning that covered my body from head to foot and kept me confined to my bed for over two weeks in the care of a day and night nurse. Years later the poisonous rash broke out again on my face and hands, but this time I was a student of Christian Science and was endeavoring to put my understanding into practice. The previous picture of pain was difficult to erase; so I sought the help of a more experienced Christian Scientist.

When I walked into the practitioner's office, he explained to me the first and only creation of God, who "saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good" (Gen. 1:31). As the practitioner continued to explain this one and only creation, I seemed to understand every blade of grass and leaf as perfect and pure in "the loveliness of Love" (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 64). I felt quiet within and truly happy. When I left his office, I went about my day's business, forgetting completely everything pertaining to the problem. That evening when I returned home, a member of my family who was not a Christian Scientist greeted me with, "What did you do to get rid of the rash?" Only then did I think of it and look at my hands and face to find them unblemished, free from any poisonous belief.
