If God is love, then our way must be love too.... The teaching of Jesus is shot through and through with this demand for love. What is the fundamental law of life? asks a lawyer. Love, says Jesus—love to God and to our fellow men every-where.... He is ready to go to any length to support his view—he does go to any length, for he goes to the cross for no other purpose than to put it past any doubting....

Christian love is ribbed through and through with principle. It is moral love that seeks above all to conserve life's highest values.... It is not selfish but other-regarding. So its chief aim is never ease or smoothness at any cost, but the true encouragement and enrichment of the one loved. So our New Testament takes a new word for it—not fitful, passionate "eros," but "agape," love that has virtue at its heart....
