Window Displays Invite Interest
[Extracts from Four Reports from Four Branch Church Reading Room Librarians]
This Christian Science Reading Room has two large display windows. In one we feature the current Bible Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly. In the other we have an electrically operated, specially designed turntable, which rotates very slowly twenty-four hours a day. This display unit was worked out by a church member with a great appreciation of and love for our Reading Rooms. The very slow speed at which it turns was selected so that window readers could make out what was printed on each book without a sense of hurry.
The turntable was originally designed as a means for acquainting the general public with our free circulating library. A copy of each book that is available to borrowers was shown in the initial display, while a neatly lettered card in the center read, "Free Circulating Library." Within a very short while we were aware of noticeable results in the daily activity of our lending library.
After a few months the attendants felt that the slow-moving, beautifully upholstered turntable might be used as a background for several other interesting displays. We are next door to the public library in this community, so many who pass us are aware of the significance of books. Our most recent display had as its object to convey the love for the Bible which the study of Christian Science induces. On the turntable we arranged Bibles, Bible Concordances, Dictionaries, and the Westminster Atlas. In the window we also featured a large leather-bound Bible and a few volumes of the Braille Bible, which we have for use in our study room. The display created much attention, and we feel that it corrected for some the mistaken view that Christian Scientists are not students of the Bible.
