When the time approached for...

When the time approached for my demobilization from the Army, we had no living accommodation, and the housing shortage at the time was acute. We knew that Christ Jesus tells us that "the kingdom of God is within you" (Luke 17:21) and that Mrs. Eddy defines "kingdom of heaven" in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health (p. 590) in part as "the atmosphere of Spirit, where Soul is supreme," and we saw therefore that man comprehends within himself the right idea of home. Not long before my return a fellow member of a branch church offered us the use of her flat for a year. This offer was gratefully accepted, and we continued to know that in reality there is no temporary home, but that divine Love's provision is a continuing provision, not subject to the mortal limitation called time.

Before the end of the year we were offered larger premises, which again met our need. In the summer of 1948 we became aware that this flat was no longer suitable for us, particularly for our young daughter. However, despite previous demonstrations, fear that we should not be able to afford what we felt was right for us held us back from trying to make a change. In the early autumn we were told by the landlord that we should have to leave. Thus impelled we went ahead, and within a week we had arranged to take the house in which we have now lived for over two years, one which has been entirely suitable.

Although the notice to leave came as a shock, we now realize that it was only an example of divine Love's tender care, leading us in the way in which we should walk. A minor point of interest in this demonstration was the complete absence of any sense of dislocation arising from the move, which with the co-operation of all concerned was comfortably completed in only one day.
