"More students, better sales"

[Extracts from a report on Reading Room relocation prepared by the executive board of a branch church]

The first time we located our Reading Room in ground-floor premises we moved it from a semibasement on a side street into more spacious quarters on one of the main streets of this community. We felt it was a step in the right direction of fulfilling its purpose and essential functions. We were, however, alert to the fact that we should leave no step untaken which would better accomplish our aims.

The librarian, those closely connected with the Reading Room work, and the board were working diligently in the interests of a more representative Reading Room. As this work continued, a member of the church informed the board of a vacancy in a new building in the center of our town, near its public library. A member of the board and the librarian went together to see the building. They talked with its owner, who said that he had been waiting to finish the other ground-floor area for desirable tenants.

Details of the rental were talked over. The owner inquired as to the nature of our business. We told him that we represented the Church of Christ, Scientist, and that we wanted ground-floor premises for a Christian Science Reading Room. He said that while the building was still in construction he had told his partner that he wished he might have the Christian Science Reading Room in it, but that the Christian Scientists were renting from a friend of his, and he felt he should not approach them. He agreed to finish the area as desired and gave us his monthly rental rate.
