The desire to tell of my gratitude...

The desire to tell of my gratitude for Christian Science has been in my thought for some time.

One healing for which I am very grateful is that of appendicitis. I had slept little and eaten practically nothing for a week, and the pain was great. I was alone in a western city in a room in which there was no telephone. The practitioner who was helping me had given me a copy of "Miscellaneous Writings" by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, and told me that there was healing in its pages.

Turning to page 180 of that book, I read the first article under the heading "Bible Lessons," where Mrs. Eddy took for her text John 1:12, 13: "But as many as received him. to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." As I studied this text and the article, it came to me clearly that man's true selfhood is not material, but spiritual, and therefore mental. I reasoned that since in reality I was the expression of God and therefore spiritual, I had existed long before I had had a human parent; that I would continue to exist after all my material surroundings had gone to decay.
