"PRINCIPLE IS IMPERATIVE"

The student of Christian Science soon learns that the study of Principle is fundamental to his advance in metaphysical understanding and demonstration. Principle is defined in a dictionary in part as "a source, or origin; a fundamental truth."

As understood in Christian Science. Principle is a synonym of God, and God is certainly the origin of all. The first words of the first book in the Bible are, "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth," and the first words of the Gospel of John are, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." In our everyday human experience the word principle is used to indicate a fundamental moral conviction. For instance, honesty, courtesy, and so on must be fundamental to members of a civilized community if harmony is to prevail.

In Science we learn that Mind, God, is the creative Principle of the universe, and by universe we mean the spiritual, factual universe, free from any belief of matter substance and material intelligence. Since Principle, the primal cause, must by its very nature be perfect, the spiritual universe, its reflection, must be perfect. To gain an understanding of this perfect Principle and its universe we must strive to obey Jesus' command (Matt. 5:48), "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."
