THE HEALING TRUTH

One Sunday morning, as Peter came out of a Christian Science Sunday School looking very thoughtful, his mother asked him what he was thinking about. He said: "Mummy, I learned about Mrs. Mary Baker Eddy, and she was wonderful. She could heal people, and she also healed herself."

Peter was nine years old and for several years had been a regular pupil in the Sunday School. He knew many of the Bible stories, and he liked to read with his mother in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy.

After they got home, Peter and his mother settled down in front of the big window, and Peter started to tell what he had learned in Sunday School that morning. He said: "When Mary Baker was a little girl, she lived with her father and mother on farm in New Hampshire. She liked to play outside. Sometines her mother would read to her from the Bible, and she liked that too. One day they read about Daniel, who prayed three times every day, so Mary decided to pray seven times every day. She made marks on the wall in the shed so she wouldn't forget how many times she had prayed."

Peter went on telling that one day, while living near Boston, Mrs. Eddy fell on an icy road and had to be carried home. No one thought she would live. But she took her copy of the Bible and read Jesus' healing of the palsied man. Peter explained that Jesus told the man to lift up his bed, and the man did. And when Mrs. Eddy read about this healing she thought that if that man could get up, she could do so too. So she got up, and she was all right.

"Peter, let us read that story in the Bible together. You get your own Bible," said his mother. Peter found the healing of the palsied man, and together they read it. Then his mother got her copy of "Miscellaneous Writings" and read what our Leader says of her experience (p. 24): "As I read, the healing Truth dawned upon my sense; and the result was that I rose, dressed myself, and ever after was in better health than I had before enjoyed."

"You see, Peter," said his mother, "after Mrs. Eddy had been healed, she had to find out what this healing Truth was. For three years she studied the Bible, and seven years after that Science and Health was printed. She was certain that God is Love, caring for His children. And she knew that God is Truth, and that God never made fear and unhappiness."

Peter's mother went on explaining: "God only knows what is good, and so God's children only know health and happiness. By knowing these truths of God and His children you can be healed of any error. Remember that Jesus promised, 'Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.'"

Two weeks later Peter said that his head was feeling so funny that he wasn't very happy. When his mother asked him if he remembered that Mary Baker prayed seven times each day, he answered: "Yes, I know. I will go in my room right now, and you don't have to help me, Mummy." Peter went to his room and closed the door. After a while he came out of his room with a big smile on his face, and said, "It's all gone, and I feel fine."

When his mother asked him what he had done, he said: "I thought that if Mrs. Eddy could heal herself by reading the Bible, I could read the Bible too, and get rid of the pain. I found the story of the palsied man, and I read it. Then I said the Lord's Prayer. And I remembered that God is perfect and so I am perfect. God is everywhere, and so there is no place for sickness. And I didn't listen to what error was telling me about the pains. Then I read 'the scientific statement of being' (Science and Health, p. 468), and I am all right again."

Peter and his mother were so happy about the quick healing that together they gave thanks to God for Christian Science and for its Discoverer, who has written down the truth so that we all can study it.
