It is with much joy that I can...
It is with much joy that I can testify to the healing and regenerating power of Christian Science. As a young child I had a long history of ill-health and frailty and so caught almost everything that was about, but as I grew older, I realized how much I was missing through this state of semi-invalidism and made up my mind to overcome it. I succeeded to a great degree, but was still suffering from weakness; and after our second son was born, I had to take afternoon rests so that I could carry on with household duties.
Soon after this my mother became very ill, and a kind friend told us of Christian Science. I did not realize that I would get so much benefit from the study of our textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, but from that time on I began to get stronger, feel much freer, and have more patience, whereas once I would be easily irritated. Soon I sought membership in a branch church and then in The Mother Church. I have had much joy and growth in serving in a branch church and feel that I have come a long way since those days.
About six years ago I was sitting in an armchair one evening feeling very tried, which was not unusual in those days. It was a weariness almost to the point of pain. I was conscious of a new step I was about to take—class instruction—and felt I must work out this condition in Science.
About a week later, when I was in church on a Sunday morning, I had the worst attack I think I had ever had. I felt very despondent, but my interest was aroused by the solo that was being sung. In the first verse were the words: "Art thou seeking material pleasure or treasure? Cease from dreams." And in the second verse I heard: "Art thou weary? Cease from dreams." As I was dwelling on this, it was as though a light had shone in my thought. Why, it was the same treatment for pain as for pleasure—"Cease from dreams."
I saw it quite clearly now, because there was no sensation in matter, neither pain nor ache nor pleasure; it was no more godly to accept pain for honest work than for any other claim. I left that service healed and have never had a return of the difficulty. I can never say in words how grateful I am for all the blessings that have come not only to me but to my family through the ministrations of Christian Science.—(Mrs.) Alice Hughes, Liverpool, Lancashire, England.
I am the youngest member of this family and I am glad that I have been brought up surrounded by harmony and healings through Christian Science. The Sunday School has taught me the way to heal false thinking, and it has been of much benefit in my studies at school.—Derek V. Hughes.
I have just completed my term of service in the Royal Air Force, and I am a member of The Mother Church. I should like to give thanks for the many times Christian Science has helped me in my job as a wireless operator in air traffic control at a bomber station. I was on duty one night when one of our bombers radioed that a bomb had become jammed in the "chute" and was in danger of exploding. I immediately knew the truth that there are no accidents in divine Mind. I maintained contact with the plane all the way home, and the pilot made a perfect landing. When the bomb was defused, it was discovered that the fuse was bent over at right angles.
I am most grateful for this and other experiences which I have had and for membership in The Mother Church.—Philippe Hughes.
I am very happy to have the privilege of corroborating the testimony of my wife. Christian Science has indeed been a source of joy and harmony to my family. I am grateful also to corroborate my sons' testimonies. We have had many healings, and I am thankful for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church and for class instruction.—Edward Hughes.
