Christian Science is the only doctor...

Christian Science is the only doctor in our home, and our two small children have been taught to look to God for any healing they may need. I should like to tell of a healing which occurred last winter and which stands out in my thought, not because it was a remarkable demonstration, but because I feel that I learned so much from it.

Our daughter, who was then in the first grade, had a sore on her knee which a neighbor's child said was impetigo—a skin infection prevalent in the school. The friend came back later in the day and said that she had been to the doctor about the same kind of sore on her face, and that he had said not to let it go, because it would spread very fast. I knew at the time that this was wholly ungrounded in Science. However, several other spots appeared on the child's legs, and before long our son, who was two, had some on his face. In spite of all I could do, I finally had to admit that fear was governing my thinking a great part of the time, because I was so near all this. Therefore I asked for help, and the practitioner was able to lift my thought above the fear in a week. Then I was able to go on alone.

During this period the school nurse called to see us and told us what should be done from a medical point of view—to remove the scabs and put on an antiseptic. I told her that we were Christian Scientists and believed in healing by prayer and that we did not want to follow the medical treatment, but would of course abide by any rule such as keeping the girl home from school. The nurse was polite, and I felt that she left us with no ill feeling.
