Reared in an orthodox faith, I...
Reared in an orthodox faith, I loved from childhood God and the Bible. As an adult I became a member of the orthodox church of my parents and of the Y.M.C.A., in which group I held a leading position for many years. This leadership demanded a consecrated study of the Bible in order to conduct meetings and to give Bible lessons, and as it took most of my spare time, I reached after several years of strenuous work the limits of my mental endurance. I became a nervous sufferer and consulted a physician, but no relief was found; so my wife, knowing something of Christian Science, advised me to have Science treatment. I refused, but when healing was not forthcoming and the symptoms were aggravated, I became humble and asked for treatment, which was lovingly given.
I began to study the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. At first the book seemed difficult to understand because of my limited knowledge of the English language and my reluctance to give up my doctrinal beliefs, but the healing of dyspepsia encouraged me to carry on with my study. The textbook says on page 222, "In seeking a cure for dyspepsia consult matter not at all, and eat what is set before you, 'asking no question for conscience sake.'" I followed this advice and had no more fear of food. I now understand that it was my fear of death which was delaying my complete healing. Often the temptation of discouragement came to me, but gratefulness for demonstrations in my family helped to overcome it.
For some months before the birth of our daughter, my wife had Christian Science treatment. The birth was very harmonious. Desiring to give the child her natural food, my wife was disappointed to be informed by the attending nurse that this would be impossible. Nevertheless, after mentioning the fact to a Christian Science friend, my wife was able to nurse the child herself. Later this child had an instantaneous healing of measles. I continued to study, and during the years the symptoms of nervousness gradually disappeared, and I now enjoy perfect health.
