Our Reading Rooms

The Joy of Serving

[The paragraphs following are quoted extracts from letters and reports received from Reading Room librarians and church boards.]

Two years ago this church was faced with a need to appoint a man attendant for evening and Sunday afternoon service in its Christian Science Reading Room, which is located in the downtown area on the ground floor. There was in our entire membership no man who could accept this position, which requires service from six o'clock until nine five evenings a week and from three o'clock until six on Sundays.

After careful consideration our board established a new committee designated as a "Reading Room Custodian Committee." This consisted of a chairman and a group of fellow workers, each of whom serves but once a month. Men serve in the evenings and women on Sundays. In addition to this initial group there are sufficient substitutes to cover any unexpected absences.
