No one could have been more...

No one could have been more prejudiced against Christian Science and at the same time more ignorant of its real teachings than I. For fifteen years I flatly refused it.

Physicians told me I must leave the classroom, and I had taken up a new line of work. Then one winter I came South with a woman whose doctor advised her to seek a warmer climate. She had injured her back by a fall on the ice and was unable to walk without a steel brace. A short time after we arrived, my friend announced that she was giving up materia medica and was going to try Christian Science treatment. To my utter astonishment she had an instantaneous healing.

I watched her closely and critically for some days and asked her what Christian Science was. Her only reply was, "A study of God." Her healing, her calmness and serenity, so impressed me that I felt impelled to investigate Science. I gave up my work, went to a practitioner, and for one week did nothing but ask questions, go to the Reading Room, and read and study the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and Mary Baker Eddy's other writings. I read late every night. In Mrs. Eddy's works I saw only love expressed and could find no contradictions. Perplexing questions about the Bible were answered, and many passages in it took on new meaning.
