SIGNS OF CHRIST'S COMING

One sometimes hears it said that Christian Scientists overemphasize physical healing as a part of religious experience. This may seem to be so because of the large number of testimonies of physical healing that are published in the Christian Science periodicals and the thousands given orally each week at the Wednesday testimony meetings held in Christian Science churches. However, the same emphasis can be found in reading the New Testament accounts of Jesus' works. Much space is given to the healings he accomplished during his mission.

Mary Baker Eddy, speaking of the appearing of divine Science, writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 150): "This coming, as was promised by the Master, is for its establishment as a permanent dispensation among men; but the mission of Christian Science now, as in the time of its earlier demonstration, is not primarily one of physical healing. Now, as then, signs and wonders are wrought in the metaphysical healing of physical disease; but these signs are only to demonstrate its divine origin,—to attest the reality of the higher mission of the Christ-power to take away the sins of the world."

Physical healing is an outward sign of an inward grace, a change of thought, a mental purification.
