For a period of over thirty years...

For a period of over thirty years I have endeavored to practice the teachings of Christian Science in my business. Twice during this period I have found myself at the peak of success, only to have it almost completely wiped out and snatched from me. It was snatched from me, I know now, due to the fact that I had a false sense of substance. I was endeavoring spiritually to demonstrate matter, which is an impossibility.

When the last war started, I had just begun to ascend the ladder of success again. The building business, in which I am engaged, almost ceased to exist. I was forced to stop building, due to governmental restrictions and shortages. Very few people were purchasing building lots, but an occasional lot would be sold, bringing in sufficient income to meet the needs of the day. I knew, however, that this was not as it should be, because there was so little activity.

At this point I sought the services of a practitioner, who quickly saw that what was needed was to have a true sense of substance established in my consciousness. From this point on I sought daily to gain a scientific sense of substance. The practitioner directed me to all of the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, our revered Leader. In "Retrospection and Introspection" (p. 85) she states, "Of this also rest assured, that books and teaching are but a ladder let down from the heaven of Truth and Love, upon which angelic thoughts ascend and descend, bearing on their pinions of light the Christ-spirit." Truly this was what I most needed.

After six weeks of my working daily with the practitioner in this way, events began to take place which proved to me that there is but one Mind, the divine Mind, and that all activity is in Mind. A large mortgage on a piece of business property that I owned was procured, which enabled me to adjust my affairs and gave me substantial capital with which to work. Several years before, I had been advised by bankers that to procure a mortgage of this type was almost an impossibility. This brought to my consciousness more than ever the power of the one Mind in the operation of the affairs of all mankind.

In the Bible we read (Rom. 8:28), "We know that all things work together for good to them that love God." During these weeks I truly learned to love God above all and to see that real substance is Life, Truth, and Love. I further saw that God sends his "angelic thoughts," and as these descend upon my consciousness, I in turn express a more spiritual sense of the Christ. I prayed daily to know that I would be receptive to His angels and would listen for His voice and none other.

As I progressed along this line of right thinking, I became more and more conscious of the Christ, and wonderful light came, manifesting itself in monetary success beyond all expectation. I am deeply thankful to God for the outward manifestation, but more grateful than words can express for the spiritual understanding of true substance which came through the "ladder let down from the heaven of Truth and Love"—all of our Leader's books.

It came clearly to me that Christian Science is the culmination of the teachings of our Way-shower, Christ Jesus, and that it is the final revelation of Truth.
