So many have been the blessings...
So many have been the blessings that Christian Science has brought into my experience that it would be difficult to begin a complete enumeration.
About nine years ago, one night while playing badminton, I broke the large bone in my right instep. Before I could be taken home, the foot had swollen greatly. Immediately upon arriving home with a friend, I tried to call a practitioner. During the various telephone calls made in trying to locate her, I told a mutual friend of the situation, and she insisted upon sending over a surgeon, her neighbor, who was at her home when I telephoned. About the time he arrived I was able to reach the practitioner, and the work was taken up at once.
When the surgeon saw the foot, he informed me that it was badly broken and would require a plaster cast for from three to six months. He knew I was a Christian Scientist and was having the help of a practitioner, but felt that without a hypodermic injection I would not be able to endure the pain. I assured him that the need for comfort would be met and asked that he merely tape my foot and place it between two pillows, as the sensation was one of complete separation from my leg and inability to hold them together. I refused the hypodermic, and he left with instructions to my friend to cut the adhesive tape on the foot when the swelling and pain became too intense.
Then began our work. We read psalms, and hymns from our Hymnal, and were in touch with the practitioner, who assured us of her watchful vigilance.
Prior to this experience I had believed that I was separated from good, from home, and from the support I felt belonged to me. The physical sensation of the torn flesh was one of separation from the rest of my body and of intense pain. Looking up the definition of "separate," "To set asunder; ... to keep apart by occupying the space between; to intervene," I realized that I had been believing there was a power that could come between God and His idea. A great sense of relief came as I voiced my desire to be obedient to the First Commandment. Although the pain continued almost beyond endurance, I clung steadfastly to the conviction that matter has neither pain nor pleasure and that as I recognized man's spiritual at-one-ment with God, harmony, health, activity, flesh would be seen to be a counterfeit, without intelligence or substance.
About five in the morning I insisted that my companion take her rest. When I was alone I tried to get out of bed, but lost consciousness. On regaining consciousness, I awakened to the realization of a greater sense of peace and well-being than I had ever experienced. It was a feeling of joy and rest and completeness.
Later that morning the surgeon called and said he had made arrangements to have my leg put in a cast, and I was to be at the hospital at noon. By this time I realized that it did not matter what mortal mind said about the foot; I knew that the man of God's creating could not be separated from good. I was a businesswoman; it was Saturday, and I was most anxious to be in my place on Monday. It seemed wise to at least protect the foot from being knocked about. So the decision was made to go to the hospital to have it placed in a splint, but not a cast.
The doctor at the hospital wanted to take one picture of my foot as it was and then one after it had been set. After taking five X-ray pictures, he came back and asked the nurse to go with him to the X-ray room. In a few minutes he returned in evident consternation. He showed me the X ray and said that if pictures taken at the end of six months in a cast looked like that, he would consider he had done an excellent job of bone setting. His X ray showed a clear break and perfect mend. He said he had been on the staff of that hospital for seventeen years and had never witnessed such a healing. Then he added, "You have a better doctor than I could ever be; you are healed."
On Monday morning, although I was able to go out, I remained at home studying and assimilating the great joy and spiritual understanding that had come to me through this experience. On Tuesday I was able to walk without even a sense of soreness. On Friday I attended a social function which required my standing for three hours. Saturday night I danced all evening without being seated. There was not even any physical recollection of the incident.
This healing did much missionary work among my fellow employees without words from me. The healing has been permanent. But more important than the physical healing was the realization that the law of God is quick and powerful.
For the great love of our Father-Mother God I am unspeakably grateful. For the revelation of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, and her loving provision in establishing the activities of our church for joy and unfoldment from class instruction, and for the great privilege of serving in our Father's vineyard, my gratitude requires that I consecrate my life.—(Mrs.) Frances Elmina Brown, Westwood Hills, California.
