"All is beauty: and knowing this, is love, and love is duty." (Browning)
GOD, THE ALL-BEAUTIFUL
Beauty is a quality of God. It is too often thought of as belonging to matter, and yet even the beauty of material things hints the beauty that is divine. Mary Baker Eddy writes, "In our immature sense of spiritual things, let us say of the beauties of the sensuous universe: 'I love your promise; and shall know, some time, the spiritual reality and substance of form, light, and color, of what I now through you discern dimly'" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 87). One of the trials of the present age is the ugliness that accompanies it in many directions. Grace and graciousness are too often absent from that which pretends to be most modern. But true beauty is a characteristic of Being which is from everlasting to everlasting.
God, the All-beautiful, is the infinite One, whom we reflect. Therefore it is for each one of us to express His beauty. That beauty has no taint of matter, has nothing to do with material form or color. There is form, yes, but that form is purely mental and spiritual; there is color indeed, but it is the bright radiance of Soul. Mind's thoughts are very beautiful, and as we express them that beauty will externalize itself.
When we look at the flowers, catch their exquisite fragrance, see the simplicity and gaiety of even the flowers of the field, we get a glimpse of the loveliness, the innocence and joyousness, of the Mind that conceived them. Let us keep our thoughts beautiful and innocent and gay, unsullied by worldliness, unburdened by sorrow, for it is our work to show forth the brightness of His glory. "Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us."
