The comfort of solid conviction; not just whistling in the dark

"THEREFORE WILL NOT WE FEAR"

When Mary Baker Eddy stated. "Christian scientific practice begins with Christ's keynote of harmony, 'Be not afraid!'" she was not stating a new rule of healing. This declaration, appearing on page 410 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," calls to the attention of those who would heal through spiritual means the scientific fact that the routing of fear from the hearts of men has been a preliminary to healing in all ages.

It was an eternally efficacious truth which the Psalmist voiced when he sang (46:1-3): "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof."

The Psalmist was not merely whistling in the dark. He was not simply trying to keep a stiff upper lip even though his knees were shaking. He had reason for his courage—for his freedom from fear. Fear could not possibly remain in the consciousness of one who realized that God is "a very present help," that He is All, ever-present good, and that His allness precludes the existence of evil or any power apart from Him.
