"Basis for our thoughts and actions"— not something which comes and goes

"GRATITUDE AND LOVE"

"Gratitude and love should abide in every heart each day of all the years." So writes Mary Baker Eddy in the Manual of The Mother Church in the By-Law concerning Easter (Art. XVII, Sect. 2).All Mrs. Eddy's published writings were divinely inspired, and the Rules and By-Laws in the Church Manual were written at different times, and as required, to safeguard the Cause of Christian Science and help in its demonstration. No detail is redundant, but each has a helpful purpose. Let us consider a few aspects of our Leader's statement quoted above and see how we may make use of it in our daily lives.

Gratitude and love are profound words. How strong, joyful, and undisturbed is the heart in which these qualities abide "each day of all the years"! And we notice that Mrs. Eddy says they should "abide" —not come and go, but remain permanently in consciousness and thus form a basis for our thoughts and actions.

It is important then that we should be consciously grateful. Mrs. Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" p. 3): "Are we really grateful for the good already received? Then we shall avail ourselves of the blessings we have, and thus be fitted to receive more."
