I did not come into Christian Science for physical healing, but because I was looking for a religion which I could really believe in. When Christian Science was presented to me, I knew at once that it was the truth for which I had been searching. I purchased a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, and a Christian Science Quarterly and with the Bible began to study the Lesson-Sermon. It was not long before I began to recognize the healing power contained in these books, and in twenty years of study I have experienced many healings for myself and my two daughters. A streptocoecal throat, which the physician said would last for many weeks, was healed in a few days, and the child was back at school within a fortnight. Pinkeye was healed in three days, and the child returned to school a day or two later; pyelitis was permanently healed overnight; malaria, scarlet fever, and tonsillitis have been quickly healed with the help of practitioners. We have had healings as the result of our own work also.

Many years ago I passed through deep waters. My home was broken up, and I was left with my two little girls and an income which seemed very inadequate after the one to which I had been accustomed. Weighed down with unhappiness and a sense of responsibility, and feeling overwhelmed with grief and depression one night. I turned to my Bible and opened it at Isaiah 54:5, "For thy Maker is thine husband; the Lord of hosts is his name." As I read these words, the weight of depression was lifted from me, and a sense of peace and harmony flooded into my consciousness. I saw that divine Mind is ever present, expressing wisdom and intelligence. and that I could not be separated from the joy and energy of Life, the tenderness and love of my Maker. Shortly after this I took the two girls to England, but in 1940 the way opened up in a marvelous manner for us to return to South Africa. We were wonderfully protected on the difficult voyage home, avoiding air attacks off the English coast and coming safely through submarine-infested waters. All through the voyage I had a wonderful, calm sense of the ever-presence of divine Love.

Soon after we arrived in this country, a house that exactly suited us became available. After we had moved in, however, I found that several things must be done to it and that we required more furniture. I tried not to be extravagant, but eventually found that I had run into debt. Very much worried about this, I decided to sit down quietly one afternoon and think it all out. Turning in prayer to my Maker, and then using a Concordance, I searched our Leader's works, and on page 307 of "Miscellaneous Writings" I found these words: "God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies. Never ask for to-morrow: it is enough that divine Love is an ever-present help; and if you wait, never doubting, you will have all you need every moment." I saw that man, the image and likeness of God, is a spiritual idea, and that, as a divine idea, I was satisfied, filled with joy and harmony, with an abundance of good. Our Master's lovely words from the parable of the prodigal son came to my thought (Luke 15:31), "Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine." My heart filled with gratitude and joy, for I knew that my need was already met. I decided to wait, "never doubting," and not to outline, Every time the thought of the accounts came to me, I just thanked God that He had provided for me.
