Army life clean, constructive, when companions are God's ideas

Christian Science has given me great cause for gratitude in the last three years. It has protected me from danger and embarrassment; it has provided me with wholesome companionship; it has led me into helpful and interesting work; and it has been the source of spontaneous joy and happy experiences.

I had longed for work in international government and studied toward this end, although how such a job was to come about I could not tell. However, shortly after I began to work in Washington, an opportunity came to serve with the military government in Germany. The Bible says (Isa. 55:12,13), "For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace.... Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree." These Biblical sayings came to pass: all the expected good in the work and life abroad was realized; none of the bad ever materialized.

I had opportunities to use Christian Science while flying to my post. Once we skidded when landing on ice, and at another time we were lost in a restricted area with no visibility, in a plane that was crippled by little gasoline, a defective radio, and only partially operating motors. Yet I had no fear. The words from Hymns Nos. 135 and 148 in the Christian Science Hymnal filled my thoughts, and we were all safe. Also, I was provided with food, blankets, money, or whatever appeared to be the need whenever I was traveling on delayed trains.
