Only spiritual growth can bring permanent satisfaction

FUN AND SATISFACTION

[Of Special Interest to Young People]

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 60,61), our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, declares, "Higher enjoyments alone can satisfy the cravings of immortal man;" and again (p. 61), "The good in human affections must have ascendency over the evil and the spiritual over the animal, or happiness will never be won."

There are certain characteristics which appear very early in every normal human life and remain through all the years. One is a sense of humor, which, to be sure, varies with the individual as to quantity and quality. Another is the search for satisfaction or happiness. When normal and well fed, a baby smiles even in sleep and is satisfied. As the baby accumulates experience, these two characteristics develop and continue to command his attention.

Just as the word "happiness," which stems from a root meaning chance or luck, has risen in our language to describe well-being, or pleasurable satisfaction, so the Christian Scientist uses the word "fun" in a usage extended beyond its original meaning of merriment.
