Goiter disappears; false appetites healed

In the Preface to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy we read (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings."

Over thirty years ago I leaned on material remedies for my substance, health, and happiness. At that time I became very ill and turned to a physician for help. After an examination I was told that I had a disease called exophthalmic goiter. It was considered rare for a man to have this disease. X rays were taken, and many consultations were held in two medical colleges; in fact, the case was reported in a medical journal. I was in the hospital for four months and came out in the same condition.

Shortly afterward I had occasion to visit a barber whom I knew. He noticed my condition and during the conversation asked me if I had ever heard of Christian Science. I said "No." He explained a little about the subject, but at the time it did not seem to register in my thoughts. He asked if I would like to talk to a practitioner. Not wanting to offend him, I said "Yes." After the practitioner's first visit, I started to attend a Church of Christ, Scientist, in the city where I was then living. Everything seemed very difficult to understand, but I can now see that the healing began in my consciousness at that time. I began to study the Bible and Science and Health, and although the progress was slow, the truth was dispelling the clouds of fear and pain and the false concepts of God and man. Confidence and assurance of God's loving care and protection were replacing false beliefs, and as the light of this precious truth dawned on my consciousness, the healing came. The goiter disappeared completely, together with the resulting abnormal condition of my eyes. Extreme nervousness also vanished.
