OUR IMPERSONAL PASTOR AND THE LESSON-SERMON

In "Miscellaneous Writings" Mary Baker Eddy says (pp. 382, 383), "In 1895 I ordained that the Bible, and 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,' the Christian Science textbook, be the pastor, on this planet, of all the churches of the Christian Science denomination." Mrs. Eddy was divinely led to ordain a dual and impersonal pastor for the Church of Christ, Scientist. Here it should be noted that we do not have two pastors, but one, dual and impersonal.

Writing more fully of this pastor, Mrs. Eddy says (ibid., p. 322), "Your dual and impersonal pastor, the Bible, and 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,' is with you; and the Life these give, the Truth they illustrate, the Love they demonstrate, is the great Shepherd that feedeth my flock, and leadeth them 'beside the still waters.'"

The central feature of a Christian Science Sunday service is the Christian Science Lesson-Sermon, compiled from the Bible and Science and Health by the Bible Lesson Committee and published in the Christian Science Quarterly. The student of Christian Science studies this Lesson during the week and applies in his daily experiences the truth it contains. On Sunday he listens attentively to the sermon during the church service and thereby gains fresh inspiration and understanding.
