THE EXALTED VIEW OF GOD'S ONENESS

The Old Testament declaration, "Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord," points to the scientific and exalted view of God as the one Father, the one creator of all existence. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, reiterates this declaration of God's oneness in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where she writes (p. 267): "God is one. The allness of Deity is His oneness."

The teachings of Christian Science emphasize the fundamental verities of being as set forth in the Bible: that God is one God; that God made all that was made; that all that God made is wholly good. Thus this Science accepts the self-evident fact that God is the one source of all actuality. God, Mind, made all in His own image. Reason and logic make it possible to see that Truth would not be Truth if it included that which is not true. So God, being one and entirely good, could not create or include anything that is the opposite of Himself.

Christianity's acknowledgment of one God precludes the theory of two creators and two creations, one spiritual and another material. The fact is that since there is one infinite God, there can be but one infinite creation, and this entirely spiritual. Material sense falsely testifies to a second or material creation which is not of itself an entity, but is only an imperfect and distorted view of the one perfect creation of God. It is necessary to differentiate between this actual spiritual creation and the false material concept of creation in order to understand the oneness of true existence.
