NEITHER BRAIN NOR BRAWN, BUT DIVINE MIND
[Of Special Interest to Young People]
From the time one small boy first attended kindergarten he did well at his lessons. At that time he knew nothing of Christian Science; but a few years later, as a result of a healing which took place in his family, he started attending a Christian Science Sunday School and also going to a new boarding school.
At this new school games were considered quite as important as work. As a rule boys were not expected to do equally well at both games and work, so most new pupils were soon labeled as being good at one or the other, as having brain or brawn, but not both. The boy of whom I write, continued to work well; but he showed no great skill at games, and before long he was labeled "a brain."
However, at his Christian Science Sunday School he had been learning things which did not fit in with this kind of labeling. He had learned what Mrs. Eddy says on page 475 in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements." He had also learned "the scientific statement of being" from the same book, in which it is stated (p. 468), "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all." He saw that what enabled him to do well at his studies was not a human brain, but the fact that God, the one infinite Mind, is the only creator, and that in reality he reflected this Mind. It was clear that such qualities as industry, right determination, thoroughness, flexibility, alertness, could be expressed by him because of his understanding that Mind supplies all that is necessary for the manifestation of intelligence; he realized that all spiritual qualities belonged to him as the idea of God.
