It has been my good fortune to...

It has been my good fortune to be a Christian Scientist all my life. I attended the Christian Science Sunday School until the age of nineteen, when I was inducted into the Army. The application of the truth gained through my study of Science sustained me through the rigorous infantry training. I also came to see that friendship is a spiritual quality, and my human need was met.

As the time approached for me to go overseas, my foremost problem seemed to be the fear of death. At this time I was led to read the following from our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 410): "Every trial of our faith in God makes us stronger. The more difficult seems the material condition to be overcome by Spirit, the stronger should be our faith and the purer our love." It was a great inspiration to me to know that Spirit would overcome the seeming forces of evil.

Through further study I experienced peace and contentment of mind during our trip across the ocean, while waiting in England and in France, and when going into combat. There was evidence of fear on many sides, but I held to the law of one cause and one effect.
