"For thou wilt light my candle...
"For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness" (Ps. 18:28). As I have advanced in spiritual growth, the word "light" as found in the Scriptures has come to have a special significance for me. Since I took up the study of Christian Science about fifteen years ago, my general outlook is so changed that I feel I am slowly but surely emerging from darkness into light. Before this I was groping for something I could not find, looking for a practical God. As a child I wondered why we could not experience healings such as we read about in the Bible at an orthodox Sunday School, for I was taught that God is always the same. When I married and had children of my own, I felt a weight of responsibility for them. I prayed a great deal and studied my Bible, but I had not yet learned to accept literally the admonition (Matt. 6:33), "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
I met a family of Christian Scientists, who radiated love and happiness. To me it appeared that they had everything they needed, and I was sure this was because of their religion. In 1931, I was critically ill in a hospital in the city where this family lived. They visited me often, and I asked them about their religion. They explained to me that man is perfect, made in the image and likeness of God, and brought me Sentinels to read. I was impressed, but I had a fear of the ridicule which I thought I should be subject to if I accepted anything so radical. After a year or two, when I was on the verge of a nervous collapse, I decided that Christian Science was the only thing that would help me. These same friends procured for me a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, which was an inspiration to me from the start. They also provided ways for me to attend lectures on Christian Science. These lectures were for me oases in the desert. My condition improved, and I learned to depend on God for help with all my problems. Christian Science is the only remedy it ever occurs to me to use when an unwelcome condition arises. I am a different person than I was when this Science found me.
What seemed to be a very serious head injury, the result of an accident, was beautifully healed with the help of a practitioner. A small growth which had started on my temple soon disappeared without leaving a scar, as I declared that my only growth is spiritual growth. Headaches and earaches are things of the past. My general health is good, and my peace of mind is worth more than I can express.
