THE NECESSITY FOR DAILY STUDY
The value, importance, and necessity of daily study of the weekly Lesson-Sermon found in the Christian Science Quarterly cannot be overemphasized. These Lessons, covering a total of twenty-six subjects, repeated twice yearly—though with different citations—afford the student much spiritual illumination and instruction on the fundamentals of Christian Science. They are built up of citations from the Bible together with correlative passages from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science.
How much importance our Leader attached to the study of the Lesson is evidenced by her statement in Article III, Section 1, of the Manual of The Mother Church, where she writes, "The Readers of The Mother Church and of all its branch churches must devote a suitable portion of their time to preparation for the reading of the Sunday lesson,—a lesson on which the prosperity of Christian Science largely depends."
Are we ever tempted to believe that we know all we need to know about any of these subjects when we have given the Lesson only a hasty or cursory reading? Do we sometimes feel we cannot spare sufficient time to study the entire Lesson daily? Do we permit "the cares of this world" to intrude upon our thought and so divert our attention that we read without understanding? Do we content ourselves with reading one or two sections a day instead of the entire Lesson? If tempted by any of these suggestions of the carnal mind, let us remember the words of our Leader already quoted. They are so definite and imperative that the obedient student permits no excuses or erroneous suggestions to keep him from daily studying the entire Lesson, that he may be clad in "the whole armour of God," and thus be "able to stand against the wiles of the devil."
