Signs of the Times
The Basis of Happiness
The Rev. Frank Martin in a column in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds, England
The typical words of Christianity are "light," "rejoice," "hope," "courage," and nowadays churches are often the powerhouses of cheerfulness in their own neighborhoods.
It is difficult to encourage the materialist who is cheerless. There is not a great deal in the world on which to base a hopeful spirit unless religion is true. Wars and suffering ... do not help us to lift up our hearts and go through the day with a song on our lips.
