Relief Work

Texas

Twice during the year this Committee was called upon to investigate relief problems in Texas. The tornado which struck Glazier and Higgins, Texas, did untold damage. A visit was made to this area and funds which Christian Scientists had given for the stricken people were applied to their relief.

When the explosion at Texas City occurred, immediately the Committee flew to the scene and set up a relief organization through the Christian Science Society there. The Christian Science Board of Directors sent a substantial check from The Mother Church Relief Fund, and churches and societies from many sections of the state sent in generous supplies of fine clothing, food, and money. These contributions enabled the Christian Scientists to render aid to an estimated number of five hundred families. Many wonderful healings were reported.

Deep gratitude was voiced by Christian Science Society, Texas City, for the permission given by The Christian Science Board of Directors and the Texas churches to apply excess funds toward the purchase of a new church building; also for the donation of the professional services of the architect who drew plans for remodeling the building. The Christian Scientists of Texas City now own their own church home.

Greece

This Committee received word from the Chairman of Christian Science Wartime Activities of The Mother Church to take over from his predecessor the remaining clothing which was sent with so much love from the former Committee. We formed a committee and together distributed the clothing to members, nonmembers, and non-Christian Scientists who were in need. They were all satisfied with the way this work was done.

As the representative of the Wartime Activities of The Mother Church, the Committee was several times invited to attend the conferences which took place in the office of CARE. All the representatives of the member agencies of CARE were present, and we gave helpful suggestions as to better distribution of food parcels to charitable institutions and indigent persons.
