The reading of the testimonies in...

The reading of the testimonies in the various periodicals has been such an inspiration to me that I can no longer postpone sending my own, although one from me was published about forty years ago.

While searching for something, I did not know just what, I visited various churches, and then I heard of Christian Science from some relatives. They gave me some literature, and after I had read a few paragraphs, I think the truth of Christian Science was apparent to me. I borrowed a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and read it after dinner at night, meanwhile smoking a pipe. After a week or two of this, the tobacco became distasteful, and I went to a shop to buy a fresh supply, as I supposed what I had to be stale. But as I entered the shop, a voice seemed to say to me, "You do not need it!" That was the end of the smoking habit.

A week or so later I consulted a Christian Science practitioner and was soon healed of the fear of the effects of food. My diet had been so narrowed down by three physicians that I could eat but little; indeed, the last of the three, a ship's surgeon, had advised me to see the best physician I could find ashore, little knowing how literally his words were to come true. I indeed found the great Physician, "who healeth all thy diseases" (Ps. 103:3).
