The blessings I have experienced...

The blessings I have experienced through the study of Christian Science and the understanding of the Bible this has given me are manifold. How I could have endured the war years, mentally or physically, without it, particularly those I spent in the armed forces, I do not know.

During the numerous air raids on the industrial section of the Rhine and Westphalia and the almost nightly alarms, I realized that so-called material protection in cellars or dugouts was inadequate. I always remained just where I was, whether it was at my desk or in my bed. But when the sirens sounded one night following a very heavy raid, I felt so uneasy that I arose and dressed. I remained in my room and opened my Bible at random to the sixty-fifth chapter of Isaiah and its condemnation of idolatry. There I read (verse 11), "Ye are they that forsake the Lord, that forget my holy mountain, that prepare a table for that troop, and that furnish the drink offering unto that number."

Thanks to the helpful teachings of Christian Science, I saw that the modern idols from which the majority of my countrymen were expecting protection, help, and benefits for Germany were war and its weapons. On reading the comforting promise in verse 13, I realized that it was the anxious thoughts of those citizens fearing another raid that were oppressing me, and all fear vanished like mist. Throughout this time, despite the destruction which occurred all around us, only one or two doors and some panes of glass in the doors were damaged in our apartment, and our furniture was unharmed.
