Ever since I could remember, I had suffered from a chronic throat trouble. I had had several attacks every year and for many years had doctored for them without receiving any lasting benefit. Once when I was at the home of some friends who were just becoming interested in Christian Science, I had one of these bad attacks. The sixteen-year-old daughter of the family asked me if I would like to have her treat me. I had always thought of Christian Science as something I did not want to have anything to do with, though I knew the treatment consisted of prayer and could not hurt me. I felt, however, that if this young girl was kind enough to offer to help me, it would be rude not to accept. So I said I should be glad to have her treat me, and she told me afterward that I was the first person she had ever tried to help.

There had been a lump in my throat which prevented my speaking aloud. During the treatment I could feel the lump disappear, and my voice returned. When this took place, it was as though a light had dawned. I did not know then what it was, but I felt that something had come into my experience which had never been there before, something which was going to change my whole point of view. After the treatment was over, I lay on the couch for a while and fell asleep. When I awakened, the high fever which always accompanied these attacks had disappeared.

Then this friend and the members of her family began to tell me a little about what Christian Science really is, and I found it was totally unlike anything that I had been led to believe. Their explanation gave me the reasonable and satisfying sense of God and man and the universe for which I had always been searching.
