WHAT IS THE EGO?

What is life? What are God, man, and the universe? What is the I AM, the Ego, the cause which is responsible for all that really is?

Many who have thought seriously about life doubtless have asked such questions. The answers to these questions are given in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. On page 281 we find this statement: "The one Ego, the one Mind or Spirit called God, is infinite individuality, which supplies all form and comeliness and which reflects reality and divinity in individual spiritual man and things." The preceding sentence reads, "The Ego-man is the reflection of the Ego-God; the Ego-man is the image and likeness of perfect Mind, Spirit, divine Principle."

From these statements we see that Christian Science teaches that, the one cause being Spirit, man is spiritual. Man, the reflection of God, infinite Mind, Spirit, includes all right ideas. He exists as the complete individual manifestation of the one Mind. As the oneness of divine Principle and its idea is discerned, the illusions of material or personal sense are dispelled. Mrs. Eddy says (ibid., p. 216), "The understanding that the Ego is Mind, and that there is but one Mind or intelligence, begins at once to destroy the errors of mortal sense and to supply the truth of immortal sense." She continues farther on (pp. 216, 217), "Give up your material belief of mind in matter, and have but one Mind, even God; for this Mind forms its own likeness."
