A long time ago a fellow worker...
A long time ago a fellow worker remarked to me, in discussing Christian Science, "It explains everything about which I have been puzzling for a number of years." It was some years afterwards that this remark occurred to me, with all its latent meaning. While in the employ of a mining company on an island in the Gulf of Alaska I was much in need of having the realities of life explained to me. False philosophy and fear of the future had resulted in a serious mental condition, and I had tried to return to the religion of my youth as a means of relief. However, this did not solve the problem, but seemed only to aggravate it. At this time a neighbor remarked to me that what I needed was Christian Science. Since I had been grasping at straws, I asked her how to go about getting this Science, and she mentioned the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and agreed to get me a copy.
When this book arrived. I felt at once that something wonderful had come into my life. Night after night I pored over its pages. My thirst for the things of Spirit would not be assuaged. I read the book from beginning to end. Many things I could not then accept, because I did not understand them, but these were passed over in order to get to those which slaked my thirst. It was like pouring water upon dry sand. As I read and reread, I was transformed; but, like David with Saul's armor, I had not proved the truth. Finally it dawned on me what was meant by the ever-recurring word "demonstration." It was then that my eyes were opened and I beheld the Christ, Truth, as the two disciples did after their walk to Emmaus (Luke 24).
Our Leader says on page 109 of Science and Health: "Christian Science reveals incontrovertibly that Mind is All-in-all, that the only realities are the divine Mind and idea. This great fact is not, however, seen to be supported by sensible evidence, until its divine Principle is demonstrated by healing the sick and thus proved absolute and divine. This proof once seen, no other conclusion can be reached." How true was this in my own case!
