Over a period of more than twenty-five years Christian Science has been found wonderfully efficient in meeting the crises that have occurred in our family of six. Our four children were healed of many so-called contagious diseases during their childhood and youth. Three times blood poisoning was overcome when the condition was deemed almost hopeless.

One of these times was when our elder son became stricken while on duty in the engine room of a ship when some necessary repairs were being made. His hand was caught and his thumb crushed under an engine ring which was being replaced. Infection set in, and his condition became very serious before he was placed in a hospital. The doctors there said the only thing they could do for him would be to amputate, but he steadfastly refused to have this done, holding them off for several days while he wrote home. He told us that he was in the hospital but did not say what was the trouble.

Upon receiving his letter I felt that I must do something very promptly about the matter. By looking in the directory of practitioners in The Christian Science Journal, I found the name and address of a practitioner in the city where the hospital was located and telegraphed him, asking that he go and see if the young man would like work done for him in Christian Science. He was gladly received, and after three days the hand was sufficiently healed so that there was no further talk of amputation and our son was able to rejoin his ship on its return to the West Coast. By the time he reached home the hand was entirely healed.
