In 1914, when I was living in Iowa, I first heard about Christian Science. Four years later, after I had moved to Illinois, I had an urgent desire to find out more about it. One day walked into an interurban urban station, and there I saw a box containing Christian Science literature. I took from the box a pamphlet entitled "God is Good."
An hour later I was talking with a practitioner. After talking with her, I went to the Christian Science Reading Room and purchased the textbook. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I had read only a few pages when the realization came that I had found the truth for which I was looking. When I had read for about two or three hours, I felt a change in myself, and I was instantly healed of swearing. The joy was great; I was very conscious of the change and never swore again. I kept on reading, and two days. later was healed of the cigarette smoking habit of twelve years" standing, and I have not had any desire to smoke since.
One evening, after I had been studying Christian Science for about six years and had become a church member, I suddenly became ill while was coming home from work. We had no telephone, and I was greatly in need of help. I knew I would not accept anything but Christian Science help, so my wife went to a family of Christian Scientists about two and a half miles away, and they gladly called a practitioner to work for me. While my wife was away, I constantly repeated "the scientific statement of being" as found on page 468 of Science and Health. I also declared that God is my Life and God is my Mind. As soon as the practitioner went to work, I felt better and quickly went to sleep. The practitioner never came to the house. In two days I was well and went back to work.
