It is now many years since the fear of a nervous breakdown led me to take up the study of Christian Science. After a long time of strain and stress it was evident that something would have to be done to relieve me and to bring me health and peace. A dear friend who had stood by me during my troubled experience took me to my first Christian Science church service. She also arranged for me to visit a practitioner, who gave me treatment. I began reading Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and after some weeks my whole outlook on life changed. As a result, I found freedom, health, and healing. My heart goes out in gratitude to the faithful friend who led me to this study, and I am grateful also to the practitioner for her ever patient and loving help at that time.
In Deuteronomy (4:35) we read, "The Lord he is God; there is none else beside him;" and in Science and Health Mrs. Eddy states (p. 2): "God is Love. Can we ask Him to be more? God is intelligence. Can we inform the infinite Mind of anything He does not already comprehend?" My healing proved the truth of these statements; and many times since, when material sense testimony would argue in favor of discordant conditions of any nature, these statements of truth have been applied with healing results.
In 1933 I had a severe attack of influenza, slight pneumonia, and jaundice. Because of certain regulations in connection with my employment, a doctor had to be called in. He administered a drug and left certain instructions to be followed. My sister, who was looking after me and was not interested in Christian Science, followed the instructions. Every kindness and attention was shown me, but a week later I was still very ill.
