For many years I read the Christian Science literature and occasionally Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I talked Christian Science and recommended it to others, but made little progress myself. However, I knew that this teaching was the truth of being, and that the time would come when I should be forced to take some forward steps. This time came when I was faced with the necessity of an immediate operation for a tumor. The physician who examined me said it would be very dangerous to wait. I decided instead to consult a Christian Science practitioner, who told me that I could be healed through the operation of Truth.

I was lovingly guided into more systematic study, and the Scriptures were illumined to me. The healing was a slow one, but during the intervening time many other healings came about. Severe periodic neuralgic headaches, which had nagged me for many years, were eliminated, also a prolonged case of insomnia. Fallen arches were overcome as I strove to understand that man has not a material structure, but is spiritual.

I studied earnestly, but the growth became larger and the symptoms were alarming. Had it not been for the faithful practitioner I should have turned back to material aid. Finally, it was pointed out to me that my mental reservation that if Christian Science did not heal me I could resort to the knife was an obstruction to the demonstration, so I set about to correct this wrong thinking. This verse from the Bible was most helpful to me (James 1:8): "A double minded man is unstable in all his ways."
