Previous to becoming acquainted with Christian Science, I had been an active member of an orthodox church. Even as a child I had sought to know God, praying in the only way I thought one could pray—on bended knees and by looking up to the heavens, trying to feel close to God. My questioning was never answered until I was led through a physical healing to take up the study of Christian Science. At that time I was suffering from constipation and hemorrhoids. I had been under medical treatment and had exhausted all kinds of medical prescriptions, but the affliction steadily grew worse. The doctors advised an operation but promised only temporary relief. The condition became acute and I was confined to bed.

During this period I had been advised many times by a member of my family to try Christian Science, but paid no attention, for I thought it to be some fad. However, in my extremity I at last consented to treatment. A practitioner lovingly treated me, and friends read Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy to me. Immediately I was soothed, the hysteria quieted, and the pain eased. Within less than a week I was up and almost entirely healed. I began to read Science and Health myself, and then I knew I had found the answer to my quest for God. The trouble entirely disappeared, and the healing has been permanent.

A new life opened for me with that first healing. I began to look to God for comfort, inspiration, and guidance in every detail of my life. I soon learned to cease human outlining and let God's will be done, for I had glimpsed to some degree "the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God."
