Keeping "rich towards God"

The Sentinel Toronto, Ontario, Canada

In various passages of Scripture a distinction is made between the riches of this world and riches of a higher order which are riches indeed. To some men of the world any kind of riches that are not of a material sort may seem visionary and unreal. But Christ [Jesus] talked of such riches, and so did Paul and other Biblical writers. Christ [Jesus] called spiritual wealth "the true riches" —a kind far more valuable, satisfying, and enduring than the material sort, he exhorted men to lay up for themselves treasures of this kind. Paul talked about "the unsearchable riches of Christ" which he said he preached unto the Gentiles.

Riches are supposed to bring contentment. The man with a million dollars cannot in ordinary times ... complain about the things he needs and cannot have. ... Nevertheless his contentment and sense of satisfaction over his lot may be hollow and superficial and may not last long.... To take his ease and eat and drink and be merry does not mean that he enjoys genuine satisfaction of soul.
