I Would Have Known Thee, Lord
"Art
thou he that should come?
Lord, give us one sign
If thou be the Son," they cried.
And they waited and doubted.
But saw not the proof
His glorious life implied.
I would have known thee, Lord.
Today, as I prayed in the silence
An angel voice within
Told me of man's perfection—
Of freedom from strife and sin.
But I questioned this angel message
As they had the man of God,
Till the question wound like the serpent
When Moses cast down his rod.
I would have known thee, Lord.
Darkness and doubt overwhelmed me:
"Could I truly have known the Son
Ere I knew that the bread he broke and shared
And the Life he lived were one?"
Then the darkness and doubt receded
As the serpent became a rod.
For I knew my Saviour at last as Truth,
And man as the son of God.
