My return to civilian life and...

My return to civilian life and occupation after nearly five years of war service causes my thought to turn in retrospect to past experiences and search for language suitable to express gratitude for the many blessings, the protection, and the guidance afforded me by Christian Science.

Dissatisfaction with my way of life led me to Christian Science in 1933. Though I had previously attended lectures on the subject and had been lent Science and Health, I could not at the time understand anything at all about it. It was not until mental unrest was climaxed by a reaching out to a power outside of myself that help came in the form of association with students of Christian Science, and again the textbook was lent to me. As related in that great parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:20), "When he was yet a great way off, his father saw him." This time I was able to understand the Word.

Then came the wonderful experience which our Leader describes in her own case as "Emergence into Light" (Retrospection and Introspection, p. 23).Very humbly the prodigal had come home. To an altogether marvelous extent, all things were new. In place of the material concept I was just beginning to glimpse the presence of the eternal, perfect spiritual idea. Is it to be wondered that this new consciousness healed a painful physical condition for which I had not sought metaphysical treatment? A partial rupture on account of which I had worn a truss for over a year to no effect, was healed as I continued to read the textbook and to learn the inseparability of spiritual ideas from divine Principle, Mind.
