SPIRITUAL STEPPINGSTONES

In the first epistle to the Corinthians (13:13) we read, "And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity." Three phases of growth in Christian Science which may be likened to faith, hope, and charity arise in the experience of every earnest student of this Science. They are steppingstones which can be taken naturally and logically and should be welcomed with joy as they are approached.

By way of illustration, the following experience which the writer had when he was healed of a gangrenous leg, and at the same time was regenerated by the ministrations of Christian Science, will serve to present a clearer picture of these spiritual steppingstones. For many years previous to this experience he had been a professional dancer. Suddenly and without warning he was stricken and rushed to a hospital, where the condition was pronounced serious.

Instead of getting better he grew steadily worse, and the doctors could do nothing to alleviate the increasing pain. A specialist advised an immediate amputation below the kneecap. Another specialist who was called gave the same verdict. The writer was told that there was no chance of saving his leg, and that his life would be endangered if he waited longer than forty-eight hours. Recalling that a friend had mentioned Christian Science to him, and that the logic of this Science had appealed to his sense of reasoning, he decided against the amputation. The same friend, upon hearing of his plight, came to visit him and recommended that he call a practitioner, which he did.
