Burnley, Lancashire, England (First Church).

The culmination of a great endeavor by Christian Scientists in Burnley and the beginning of a new chapter in their history of progress was seen in the dedication of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Burnley, on Sunday, May 18, 1947.

In 1913 a small group of interested students began to hold Christian Science services in a small room in Victoria Street. Early in 1914 they moved to larger premises in Nelson House. In 1916 this group was recognized by The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, as Christian Science Society, Burnley. In 1922 a church building in Liverpool Road, Rose-grove, was purchased. This building was dedicated in January, 1927.

In January, 1928, the society was authorized by The Mother Church to be known as First Church of Christ, Scientist, Burnley.

A more central location had long been sought, and in 1933 a large Methodist church in Hammerton Street was bought and altered to suit the needs of Christian Science activities. It is this building which was dedicated.
